Social Media Use During the Transition Into and Through the First Year of College

This paper shares the synthesized findings from two constructivist qualitative studies about the development of a sense of belonging for 66 first-year students. Social media provided students unique forms of instrumental and relational support as they developed a sense of belonging during their first-year transition. Prior to and after arrival, students used social media to communicate differently with university peers and those with whom they had prior relationships.
