2018 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting Organized by ADP, TDC, and NASPA

Pre-conference sessions will be offered on June 6, 2018, at an additional cost. 

When submitting a proposal for this year's convening the conference committee asks you to consider how to answer the four questions proposed in our emergent theory of change and how these threads and tags intersect with your work whether it be around assessment, political engagement, community partnerships, service-learning, dialogue and deliberation, and so forth.

  

Program Submission Deadline:  January 29, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. EST

All Coordinating Presenters will be notified by email of their program status (Acceptance / Rejection) by March 9, 2018

  • Please submit demographic information for the coordinating presenter and complete all of the fields below.
  • For longer text fields, such as the program abstract and outline, you may find it easier to type in a word processing program and cut and paste the text into the space provided.

Please be sure to add coordinating presenter contact information and click "Submit" before exiting the program submission process. 

 

If you plan to submit multiple proposals, please complete each proposal and click “Submit” once a program has been submitted.  You can then start a new form to submit a new proposal. Do not click the Back button on your browser as this will remove previously entered information.

Our 2018 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting (CLDE18) is a conference intended to facilitate exchanges of knowledge and develop a sense of community around our shared civic learning and democratic engagement work. This meeting is designed around our emergent theory of change which poses four important questions:

  1. Purpose: What are the key features of the thriving democracy we aspire to enact and support through our work? 
  2. Learning Outcomes: What knowledge, skills, and dispositions do people need in order to help create and contribute to a thriving democracy? 
  3. Pedagogy: How can we best foster the acquisition and development of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for a thriving democracy? 
  4. Strategy: How can we build the institutional culture, infrastructure, and relationships needed to support learning that enables a thriving democracy? 

The theory of change also suggests that campuses consider how best to construct campus cultures and contexts that foster:

  • Civic Ethos of campus: The infusion of democratic values into the customs and habits of everyday practices, structures, and interactions; the defining character of the institution and those in it that emphasizes open-mindedness, civility, the worth of each person, ethical behaviors, and concern for the well-being of others; a spirit of public-mindedness that influences the goals of the institution and its engagement with local and global communities.  

  • Civic Literacy & Skill Building as a goal for every student: The cultivation of foundational knowledge about fundamental principles and debates about democracy expressed over time, both within the United States and in other countries; familiarity with several key historical struggles, campaigns, and social movements undertaken to achieve the full promise of democracy; the ability to think critically about complex issues and to seek and evaluate information about issues that have public consequences.  

  • Civic Inquiry integrated within the majors and general education: The practice of inquiring about the civic dimensions and public consequences of a subject of study; the exploration of the impact of choices on different constituencies and entities, including the planet; the deliberate consideration of differing points of views; the ability to describe and analyze civic intellectual debates within one’s major or areas of study.   

  • Civic Action as lifelong practice: The capacity and commitment both to participate constructively with diverse others and to work collectively to address common problems; the practice of working in a pluralistic society and world to improve the quality of people’s lives and the sustainability of the planet; the ability to analyze systems in order to plan and engage in public action; the moral and political courage to take risks to achieve a greater public good. 

  • Civic Agency involves the capacities of citizens to work collaboratively across differences like partisan ideology, faith traditions, income, geography, race, and ethnicity to address common challenges, solve problems and create common ground; requires a set of individual skills, knowledge, and predispositions; also involves questions of institutional design, particularly how to constitute groups and institutions for sustainable collective action.

Roundtable Discussion: A presenter-facilitated discussion that allows participants to more deeply engage with an idea, program, research or to reflect on their conference experience unencumbered by technology.

Research- or Program-Based Poster Session: A session that allows presenter(s) to share an idea, a program or a specific topic. One-on-one interactions facilitated by a poster session help the presenter(s) gather feedback from conference attendees on their ideas, data, analysis, and/or results. 

Think Tank Session: A session that affords presenters the opportunity to collaborate with other educators around a specific topic or idea. Presenters can anticipate being paired with another presenter or group of presenters. The Think Tank Session is designed to bring together various institutional types. This is an opportunity for content experts to facilitate a conversation with conference attendees to address current events, trends in content, and how-tos.

Workshop Session: A 45-, 60, or 90-minute presentation session that is ideal for a panel or multiple presenters submitting together. This is an option in which a presentation might include research, campus and/or community programs, partnerships, and background information. This session allows faculty and practitioners to demonstrate how to create a civically engaged classroom or community-based learning experience enhanced by democratic learning. This session is intended for individuals or concise group presentations on trending topics.


Please note that your session may be accepted for a presentation in a different format. The Executive Planning Committee selects a diverse array of sessions and session types in order to maximize the experience of conference attendees, and often accepts programs as a different session type.

Program Outline/Description

Outline/Description should be lengthy enough to give the reviewers an understanding of your program session. It should also address the following points:

  • Goals of presentation.
  • Identification of the program format (e.g., lecture, panel, debate or workshop) including methods for participant involvement (e.g., discussion, effective practice sharing or case study analysis).
  • Evidence of the conceptual foundation for proposal content including ways the program content is grounded in research, relevant experience, a cogent model or appropriate theory.
  • Relevance to conference themes or related topics.
  • Submission for research- or program-based posters will be reviewed along these areas:
      • Depth--the details offered into what will be and/or was learned through the project/program/research/topic
      • Intended content of poster--clearly conveying a snapshot of the work intended to engage the audience; what is novel and important about your work; what visual elements can you use to make your poster appealing and stimulating to viewers?
      • Connections--identifying best practices or lessons learned regarding your work and the areas of civic learning and democratic engagement.

For all sessions with the exception of Roundtable Sessions, rooms will be equipped with Wi-Fi, and a LCD projector and screen. NEW THIS YEAR: Presenters will be responsible for providing their own laptop technology. If you bring your own Apple/Mac computer, please note that you will need to bring the appropriate LCD adapters with you. Due to the significant cost of audio-visual equipment, we may not be able to meet all requests for additional A/V equipment. In the event that the equipment is not available or cost prohibitive, you will be contacted to discuss options for your presentation. All poster sessions should not require any A/V needs. Poster session presenter(s) will receive pins to hang the poster in a designated space at the meeting. All poster session materials should be printed before arriving onsite.
